Where is Oporto

When the question of where is Oporto pops up, one has to first realize that Oporto and Porto are the same exact place, meaning it’s the second largest city in Portugal as well as the capital of the country’s Northern region.

The city developed along the hills overlooking the Douro river estuary and features a historical center that has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996. The city has been inhabited constantly since at least the 4^th century.

That’s the basic location of where is Oporto but what is it like in terms of weather? The city feature a semi-Mediterranean climate, but due to its positioning it is strongly affected by the Atlantic ocean this in turn makes it cooler than other cities with similar climate. Despite this it isn’t unheard of for the temperature in mid-August to reach as high as 40 degrees Centigrade, but the winters are mild and humid with the occasional sub-zero night.

It’s important to be aware of where is Oporto because some consider it to be amongst the last of the undiscovered European metropolises, although that isn’t expected to be the case for longer. There are lots of direct flights from all around Europe – and even from America – that will make Oporto much less of an unknown very soon.

Now the city’s name should be more than familiar to those who know their wine or those who like to cook tasty recipes, because it is the place that originated and named Port Wine. The place should also be familiar to all Harry Potter fans since this is where author J. K. Rowling was living when she started writing her first book.
